Prize-winning speaker Elizabeth Johnson with English teacher Brad Rice

Big Bear Lake, CA March 6, 2014 – Big Bear High School student Elizabeth Johnson took home the $200 prize for 1st place at the annual Speech Trek contest for high school students. Her five-minute speech addressed the topic of “Women at the Top…Why Not?” Judges will now view performance DVDs of first place winners from throughout the state and send the top three to compete at the state competition this spring. There, the public speakers will compete for even bigger cash awards.

Multiple local businesses supported the local contest, which was sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) produced in collaboration with Bearly Speaking Toastmasters.

Beau Revac won Second Place and $150, Arturo Atilano placed Third taking home $100, and Madison Waner took Fourth Place and $50–all at Keller Williams Realty in Big Bear Lake.

AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. Contact Sara Tully for more information at (909) 544-1633.
